My Dream for Peace

peace

With the passing of International Day of Peace last Friday, I am reminded of my work in my undergrad years on human rights and the developing world. What would it mean to have peace?

Peace, to me, is not a middle-class white American idyllic existence, but a unique vision for each culture, each community to choose. Peace may be a mother choosing to have a safe and clean birth, while still honoring traditional practices. Peace may be a child recovering from a landmine injury, able to get proper care and prosthetics. Peace may be the dismissal of nuclear weapons and the end to all wars worldwide. Today and tomorrow, peace is absolutely not giving up. Peace is acting out for others, standing up to wrongdoing and peace is showing that we can live in a world where differences are celebrated, not punished.
That is my dream for peace – what is yours?

I really appreciate this post. I remember in college they added a program on peace studies. It’s interesting that people usually relate peace with a stereotype of a hippy or this box for the kind of fantastical person that’s put into a box. In reality peace is hard work and in order to achieve it people need to be intentional about working towards peace. For me, peace is people going outside of their comfort zones and learning about and putting themselves in the shoes of another. Peace is people loving each other even amidst differences.

Sasha, how thoughtful a description! That kind of peace transcends borders, gender, peoples, time and occupation. Love it!
